ABOUT FELT:
Felt is a fabric made from sheep's wool. Its peculiarity is that no tools are needed to create it, only our hands and water! This is possible due to the morphology of sheep fiber. If we observe it under the microscope, we see that it has something like scales, in contrast to the goat, for example. which is smooth.This is exactly what makes the wool "ketch" as you work it with water and friction.This technique is the oldest way of making fabric and has its roots in the vast steppes of Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan. In ancient Greece it was also used and called felt. The strange thing is that in modern Greece there is no evidence that proves that this technique was used, at least in the last 100 years. None of the grandmothers I have met know this simple way of making sheep cloth, while they know all about the difficult art of the loom!
In recent years, of course, felt has returned to the craft scene, this time from northern Europe, where it has been reduced to a very modern art. In modern ketche we use many varieties of hair such as fine merino wool, alpaca, cashmere and combine them with silk, linen and cotton fabrics. The results are impressive and fast, just what is needed for the modern man who is no longer famous for his patience!!!
